Clan's are groups of people that band together to get missions done, they can share gil, items along with many other things as well. There are several benefits of joining a clan, one if your clan owns a certain area then shops, inns and other things will be cheaper and 50% of the shops profit goes to the clan. Clans can fight one another which is called an engagement. An enagement is an ofifcal battle between two clan's no to the death. The battle is won when all the members are k.o or flee/give up from battle. There are laws to follow during an engagement the Judge and overseer of the battle will tell you what they are for the day. For example there might be a law forbiting magic use which means if you use any type of magic your d.c and are sent to prision.
